Kenyan runners dominate at 2012 Ottawa race week-end!
Saturday May 26 and Sunday May 27 2012 were two very good days for proud Kenyans who watched their compatriots ascend the podium on several occasions to claim top places on the podium in their respective race categories. Our Kenyan runners "swept" the podium in the men's marathon, and our sister Ruth Wanjiru caught up to our Ethiopian sisteren to take the third spot in the women's event.
Kenya's results in Ottawa this year were outstanding indeed. Starting on Saturday, May 26, with a time of 27:41, 30-year-old Geoffrey Mutai (Boston marathon winner) led a tough field of elite racers across the finish line of the 10K distance. The following morning, Laban Moiben came first in the marathon, in 2:09:12, ahead of compatriots Julius Karinga, who finished just one second later. Vincent Kiplagat came third, in 2:11:04. Kenyan Ruth Wanjiru finished 3rd in the women's marathon with a respectable time of 2:33:16. As has been the tradition for several years, the Kenyan High Commissioner (H.E. Simon Nabukwesi) held the tape with Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson at the finish line. Throngs of excited Kenya fans waved flags and cheered on their Kenyan heroes at the top of their lungs all along the race route.
On the afternoon of May 27, the Kenyan High Commissioner hosted all the Kenyan athletes and many of their compatriots and friends - some having travelled from out of town - at the residence during a special Madaraka Day/Ottawa Race Week-end celebration. A very good week-end of long-distance running for Kenya and East Africa indeed!!
