TALK: The Institute of African Studies presents: From Hopelessness
to Hope, Africa on the Rise, with Hon. Tendai Biti, Minister of Finance,
Government of Zimbabwe. Hon. Tendai Biti is a lawyer who was the
youngest partner ever at the Harare law firm, Honey and Blackenberg. As a
practicing lawyer, he handled thousands of labour and human rights litigation, including successfully repealing section 6 of the Law and Order Maintenance Act (which does not allow anyone the right to demonstrate without police clearance) and various constitutional cases like those of Margaret Dongo and Ndabaningi Sithole. He is a founding member of Zimbabwe Lawyers For Human Rights and the National Constitutional Assembly. He also is a founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and crafted the “RESTART” - their economic blueprint. He was elected MDC MP for Harare East Constituency in 2000 and has held that seat in the following two parliamentary elections. In 2005, he became the
Secretary General of the MDC. He became Finance Minister in the Inclusive
Government in February 2009 and remains in that cabinet position to the

Cuban beat and spicy Latin tunes served with Caridad’s exuberance. Caridad Cruz Vilain was born in Havana, Cuba, into a musical family deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban culture. Caridad studied music for three years at Havana's Escuela Superacion Tocnico Profesional Ignacio Cervantes under the tutelage of Argelia Fragoso, while at the same time taking private vocal training from Margarita Orutinier. In 2006, Caridad toured New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut, accompanied by some of
New York's leading Latin jazz players, like bassist Ruben Rodriguez and conguero Chembo Corniel. In Montreal, backed by the powerful 9-piece salsa band Ritmo Caribeno, she sang a Celia Cruz retrospective, which was repeated in the 2006 Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. In 2007, Caridad exploded onto the Ottawa scene, with appearances in the National Arts Centre's Quebec Scene festival, the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Ottawa Bluesfest. The People of the Kattawapiskak River Film Screening. Free public screening of a new documentary about Attawapiskat by Governor General’s Award-winning filmmaker, Alansi Obomsawin. The film includes personal accounts, political debates in the House of Commons, and footage from the federal court trial on Attawapiskat third party management. Obomsawin is the director of over 30 films including Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance (1993), a documentary about the 1990 Mohawk uprising in Kanehsatake and Oka , which has won 18 international awards. She was present in Attawapiskat in 2011 when the housing crisis on the reserve came to national attention.
