FILM & BOOK LAUNCH: Institute of African Studies at Carleton University and Octopus Books present veteran analyst and activist John S. Saul who will participate in the film screening of the award-winning documentary, Miners Shot Down (Director: Rehad Desai; Producer: Anita Khanna; Country: South Africa; Year: 2014; Duration: 86 min.) with a launch of his latest book A Flawed Freedom, Rethinking Southern African Liberation. As part of discussion for his book, John will offer the context of the incident depicted in the film takin place in South Africa.
The discussion will be chaired by Toby Moorson, Sessional Lecturer, Institute of African Studies and PhD Candidate, Department of History, Queen’s University. This event is part of the one-day conference, “South Africa after Apartheid: Critical Reflections” taking place on Friday, November 7th.

CONFERENCE: South Africa after 1994: A critical reflection of the post-Apartheid era. The Institute of African Studies is pleased to announce a one day conference focused on South Africa since the end of Apartheid. With the generous support of Carleton’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of History and the Institute of African Studies, we have brought together leading South African and North American scholars, public figures, and commentators who will provide their insight and analysis to facilitate probing discussions of the past, present and futures of South Africa, a leading economic and political state in Africa and beyond. The keynote speaker will be Irvin Jim, General Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA). Other speakers include: Hein Marais (South African author and political analyst); Zine Magubane (Boston College); Dan O’Meara (Université du Québec à Montréal); Richard Saunders (York University); and Linda Freeman (Carleton University).
There will be a screening of the award-winning South African documentary Miners Shot Down (2014) about the police shooting of striking mine workers in South Africa on the evening before, Thursday November 6th. ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION: The Institute Of African Studies Presents “Somalia: Beyond the Headlines” With Fowsia Abdulkadir, PhD candidate, Canadian Studies (Carleton), policy analyst and independent researcher on conflict analysis, transitional justice, and post-conflict justice mechanisms and Abdi Aynte, Executive Director, The Heritage Institute for Policy Studies (Mogadishu) and award-winning journalist. This roundtable will discuss current conflicts in Somalia, bringing insight into the multi-scale historical, social-cultural, and political processes and contexts which are usually downplayed or ignored in media discussions. The speakers will highlight the complex contextual, political and historical processes that shaped the development, demise and destruction of the Somali state, discussing the current situation as well as comment on the possible road ahead. This is part of the African Studies Umeme: African Flashpoints Series (carleton.ca/africanstudies/events/umeme-african-flashpoints/)
Umeme: African Flashpoints brings together experts in a roundtable format to discuss such current experiences which confront the people in different locations in Africa, and which roll across media screens and pages across the world. Umeme is KiSwahili for lightning, the perilous bolt of electricity flashing across the sky which demands attention and reactions.

Besides the scholars’ thoughtful artwork, the event will feature spoken word entertainment from wordsmith extraordinaire, Ritalin, refreshments, music, food, and more interesting, cool people meeting together in one room than you can possibly imagine. Funds raised at the event will contribute directly to secondary school scholarships for students from Mathare.
