Jean Albert’s (495 Somerset Street West, Ottawa)
Ottawa Young Black Professionals and the Umoja Network presents: "Friday Night Lights: To Educate or Placate: That is The Question." We will begin the evening with dinner at Jean Albert’s American Style Soul Food restaurant to discuss the realities and practical application of dealing with cultural etiquette in the workplace. Have you ever been at work and experienced any of the following: "Where are you from? No, where are you really from?" “He wasn't what I was expecting. He spoke so well over the phone.” "I am not a racist because my best friend is black…” “Wow! Your hair is so neat!" (as the person proceeds to touch your hair). How do you respond? Do you take the time to 'skool' your colleagues on cultural etiquette or do you placate and think, “Why bother?" or "What's the big deal?" Let’s share and equip each other with tips and tricks on how to handle those awkward situations. Jean Albert’s will supply a catered dinner of homemade, grandma's original: fried chicken, mac n’ cheese, mashed potatoes, coleslaw and cornbread for $12/person. Please RSVP by noon Thursday September 30. For more info, email: [email protected] Ottawa Young Black ProfessionalsWebsite: www.oybp.ca

CD RELEASE CONCERT: The Mighty Popo is releasing a new CD, Gakondo. This is Popo's first acoustic CD and his first written solely in Kinyarwanda, the language of Rwanda. "Gakondo" means "origins" or "tradition". In this journey back to his Rwandan roots, Popo starts with the intwatwa songs of the Batwa people and mixes in powerful rhythmic Bahutu soundscapes and Batutsi pastoral melodies. When Kofi Ackah's percussion, John Reichmann’s mandolin, Aron Niyitunga's melodic guitar work and the slide guitars of Doug Cox and Vince Halfhide build on this foundation, centuries of tradition meet dynamic new acoustic sounds in a captivating blend. $20 cover charge.
