CONCERT: Nhapitapi Zimbabwean Sounds. Admission: $10 at the door. Nhapitapi will be bringing the mbira and zimbabwean chimurenga
music and dance hot energy to Ottawa. About Nhapitapi: Nhapitapi is a Toronto based Zimbabwean Music Crew, who specialize in rich old musical and dance traditions from southern africa. Over the last 5 years they have been invited to play at Festivals, Community Centres, Schools, people's homes across Ontario, in BC and the US. Nhapitapi music is centred around Mbira, an instrument that has been played in Zimbabwe for hundreds of years. Mbira music could be thought of as one of the classical musics of Zimbabwe. Its dissonant bell-like sound is played in cascading rhythmic patterns for uplifting secular occasions, as well as for spiritual ceremony and ritual. In an authentic context, mbira music can be trance inducing. Mbira music has healing and therapeutic properties. Typically, Nhapitapi starts with the sound of three interlocking mbiras both energizing and healing. Upon the mbirasthey stack up vocals, shakers, hand drum, guitar, calling down the spirits and the ancestors to join. The effect is magical and invigorating, when the time is right they throw energetic dances to complete the party. Many have found the music to have a universal appeal both to those who know it well, and to people who have never heard this kind of "Ancestral" music.
Nhapitapi consists of: Chiko Chazunguza-percussion; Memory Makuri- percusion, vocals, mbira and dance; Evelyn Mukwedeya-vocals and
mbira; Moyo Rainos Mutamba- mbira, vocals and dance; Samuel Mukwedeya- guitar. Featuring Drummer- Tich Maredza
