Ottawa Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington - (Including Dr. King's historic "I Have a Dream" speech)
Wednesday, August 28
7pm
Parkdale United Church 429 Parkdale Ave. (at Gladstone Ave.)
Rev. Dr. Anthony Bailey and a group of Ottawa volunteers will be hosting a community commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington and Dr. King's 'I Have a Dream' speech. This speech was made during the most important civil rights demonstration in American history.
As one commentator has noted: "It was the heart of the civil rights
movement - eight years after the anti-segregation Montgomery bus
boycott; three years after the lunch-counter sit-ins in Nashville and
Greensboro, N.C.; two years after the first Freedom Rides on interstate
buses through the South; and three months after police in Birmingham,
Ala., horrified the nation by using attack dogs and fire hoses against
women and children protesting segregated public facilities." The March
was titled a March for "Jobs and Freedom", and was calling for economic
justice, desegregation and the enforcement of anti-racism legislation.
This community gathering will feature brief reflections, soloists
singing African American Gospel and Spiritual music, Spoken Word Poetry,
a three-voice tribute to Dr. King, a presentation from a local
anti-poverty advocacy group, and recollections from a couple who
attended the March and heard the speech on August 28, 1963.
All are welcome to join us for this event. Please invite friends,
family and colleagues.
Also, at 3:00 pm on August 28th, the organizing group has arranged for City Hall to ring its bells and for the carillonneur to play music in
the Peace Tower in tribute to Dr. King's legacy. This is in response to
a request from the King Center in Atlanta, GA.

The One World Film Festival invites you to a benefit screening of "Woodstock in Timbuktu: The Art of Resistance". French and Tamasheq with English subtitles, 90 mins. "In January 2011, the international Festival au désert took place over three days in the dunes of Timbuktu, already overshadowed by the infiltration of Islamic extremists. Hosted by the Tuareg people or Kel Tamasheq, as they call themselves, the festival is the ideal setting for an encounter with this legendary people. Through intimate insight into nomadic life and ancient traditions, the Kel Tamasheq tell us of their plight, their fears and their fight for survival. Alongside great traditional music, the film captures the mesmerizing beauty of the Saharan landscapes and its people." – CindigoFilm Trailer: http://www.woodstockintimbuktu.com/en/trailer.html
