CONCERT: Oumar Ndiaye en acoustique. Musique sénégalaise. OUMAR

SCREENING: U.S. documentary "Unmosqued". Unmosqued was
“crowd-funded” on Kickstarter by hundreds of Muslims across the US who felt the need to make a film showcasing their concerns. "Unmosqued" explores issues from the division of mosques by ethno-cultural or even national identity, to the lack of support for Muslim converts which can result in them leaving the faith, to the lack of Muslim women on mosque boards, to the disengagement of Muslim youth because of a lack of relevant programming, to the hiring and treatment of imams, and the long-term sustainability of mosque-building projects. Organizers hope that the discussion, which will be facilitated in order to uphold a respectful and constructive atmosphere, will empower not only those Muslims who feel disconnected from mosques, but also the hard-working volunteers of mosque boards who are struggling to find the financial and human resources to build and
maintain their mosques. UmmahHub, an Ottawa-based crowd-funding platform for Muslim community projects, has partnered with Muslim Link, Ottawa’s Muslim Community Newspaper, and the Carleton Centre for the Study of Islam to bring the film to the city. Tickets are $10 for students and $12 for adults. Seating is limited. To register visit: http://ummahhub.com/unmosqued

PANEL DISCUSSION: Together We Can: Men Speak Out on Violence
Against Women. What can boys and men do about violence against women? Glen Canning, Rehtaeh Parsons’ father, will help answer this question at our upcoming speaker series event. Join us for this honest and compelling discussion about positive masculinity. With recent events on university campuses in the city and beyond, many men in the community want to help. Now’s the time to step up. Our panel of speakers will touch on questions including: What does it mean to be a man? What lessons can we draw from high profile events—both good and bad—in terms of how we view and treat women? How can boys and men model positive behaviours? Let’s talk. Together, we can make a difference. Presenters: Glen Canning (activist and Rehtaeh Parsons’ father), Chief Charles Bordeleau (Ottawa
Police Service), Caroline Andrew (Chair, University of Ottawa Task Force on
Respect and Equality), Councillor Shad Qadri (Chair, Crime Prevention Ottawa Board of Directors). Moderator: Adrian Harewood (Anchor, CBC News: Ottawa). Questions will be encouraged in both official languages. R.S.V.P. to Crime Prevention Ottawa at [email protected] or 613-580-2424 ext. 22454 *Please note that space is limited.*

PLAY: Oil and Water, by Robert Chafe. An Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland Production (St. John's). Directed by Jillian Keiley. Running time is approx. 1 hr 25 min. with no intermission. A compelling true story of rescue, rebirth, and salvation. Barely surviving a WWII shipwreck, U.S. sailor Lanier Phillips becomes the first black man to appear in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland. Long accustomed to racism back home, Lanier’s life is forever altered by the kindness and generosity of local residents. Hopeful and haunting, bleak and beautiful, Oil and Water’s tale of transformation – of baptism, cleansing, and awakening – delivers a powerful dramatic punch. P.S.: Lanier Phillips (1923 – 2012), the U.S. Navy’s first black sonar technician and a civil rights activist, was also an honorary member of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador.
