Pub Night with Paul Dewar - Conflict Minerals Awareness. As a
follow up to the bill recently introduced by Ottawa Centre MP Paul Dewar
requiring electronics firms to exercise oversight when purchasing minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Carleton New Democrats will be hosting a pub night and information session. Paul Dewar will be speaking on the issue and answering questions, everyone from the campus community and beyond is more than welcome to attend. A brief summary of the issue - The Democratic Republic of Congo has been plagued by war since the overthrow of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997, the conflict which is the most costly since 1945 has claimed approximately 5 million lives and witnessed interventions by numerous African states, horrendous war crimes and the exploitation of civilian labour. The nation's vast mineral resources have been used to fuel the conflict and prolong the misery of the Congolese people. The proposed legislation will ensure that companies inform the general public of the potential presence of conflict minerals within their products, this will empower Canadian consumers to make informed and ethical choices.
