The purpose of the Men of Honour Exchange is to honour the accomplishments of outstanding individuals who deserve to be recognized. The BBPA believes that the men in our communities who have done exceedingly well
to advance themselves and who stand as a beacon of hope for other men should be celebrated.

 The 2012 Distinguished Men of Honour Award Recipients
 
JAMAAL MAGLOIRE  
A twelve-year veteran of the National  Basketball Association, Jamaal "Big Cat" Magloire-the tough, defensive-playing  centre, resilient enforcer, rebounder, and shot-blocker-was born and raised in  Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Trinidadian parents, Garth and  Marion.While playing basketball is his first love, it is only one of many strong attributes that make Jamaal an outstanding leader in his community and an ambassador for Toronto's Caribbean culture. Jamaal is a
supporter of Canadian Tire's Jumpstart charities, and he continues to be involved with his mother Marion's non-profit organization, Youth Deserve a Chance to Dream.He founded the Jamaal Magloire Basketball Association (JAMBA) in 2006, providing children in Scarborough (the area of Toronto where he grew up) with the opportunity to play and compete amongst the Ontario Basketball Association and various other tournaments. JAMBA also encourages education as a means to achieving dreams, and players have had high success rates with acceptances to colleges and universities. 
 
AL ST. LOUIS  
Al St. Louis is one of Toronto's foremost spoken word artist, actor and motivational educator.As the founder and host of When Words Are Spoken, his unique brand of spiritually intense poetry is embraced world-wide.Motivationally, Al speaks to adults and youth within high schools and universities encouraging all to dream bigger and unlock their passion.His equal passion and talent for acting has lifted his career to new and exciting heights, acting and performing alongside many reputable directors, actors, and artists in theatre film and mainstream television.Being a poet, motivational educator, actor as well as owner of Loc 'N Twist Natural Hair Studio, Al never has a dull moment, however, he always makes time to spread the "word." 
 
MARLON REID 
Marlon Reid has worked in the Investment Banking arm of TD Bank Group for over ten years.In 2009, he was
appointed to co-chair the Black Community Subcommittee of TD Bank's Diversity Leadership Council. He also serves as the program director of a TD Securities training program. Marlon is a tireless and committed role model and community leader, serving two terms as President of the Urban Financial Services Coalition (UFSC), and he also chairs UFSC's Corporate Advisory Board. Marlon holds a business degree from York University, a law degree from the
University of Ottawa, and a Master of Finance degree from the Rotman School of Management. 

NATHAN DOWNER 
Nathan Downer currently works as a reporter/anchor for CP24 Toronto's Breaking News, where he covers breaking news and featured stories.Nathan is an active member of the Canadian Association of Black Journalists, and he is involved with many charities, such as Camp Jumoke, which helps children with sickle cell anemia, and the Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario, where he serves on the advisory board. Nathan began his career in 2000 hosting a talk show on CHIN radio.In 2001 he hosted "SportsRap with Nathan Downer," and "The Kenny and Nate Show," as well read the news on FLOW 93.5. From 2003 to 2008 Nathan worked as a reporter at Global News.While he was there
he won three prestigous RTNDA awards. 
 
MARK BECKLES 
Mark Beckles is the Regional Vice President, Retail Banking with RBC Royal Bank. He has a broad
experience in financial services, particularly in retail, property, liability, and insurance programs. In 2002, Mark assumed the role of CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (Canada), which has drawn high praise from international leaders like former United States PresidentBill Clinton. In 2011, Mark received the City of Toronto Bob Marley Award for his commitment to diversity and city building. Mark, who holds an MBA in International Business from the University of Bradford, currently serves on the Advisory Board of Afro Global Television and the Urban Financial
Services Coalition.

KARDINAL OFFISHALL 
 
Kardinal Offishall is a four-time Juno award winner, multiple ASCAP award winner and Socan award winner. He also holds four MMVA's under his belt, along with epic MMVA performances. Kardinal is one of the hardest working men in the business and never stops working to perfect his craft as an artist, performer,  entertainer, and businessman.  
The Toronto-bred star has crisscrossed the globe performing in some of the most prestigious stadiums, arenas and festivals, giving his fans the ultimate high energy, mash-up performance. Kardinal Offishall has positioned himself as an iconic figure amongst the international hip-hop and dancehall scene and is once again ready to take the
world by storm.

DWIGHT DRUMMOND  
News anchor Dwight Drummond is the co-host of CBC News Toronto at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. weeknights on CBC Television. Dwight has been covering news in Toronto as an anchor and reporter for over two decades, previously as the crime specialist for CityNews and co-host of Citynews@Five on CityTV. Dwight has also received a number awards for his police reporting and awards and commendations for his community work. He was honoured with the Men of Excellence Award and the African Canadian Achievement Award for excellence in media.

 MARK CUMMINGS  
Mark Cummings is  the Senior Vice-President and Head, Insurance Canada and has overall responsibility for developing, leading and executing Scotiabank's Canadian Insurance strategy.He is also responsible for all existing insurance business lines and subsidiaries in Canada. Mark serves as a director on a number of Scotiabank Insurance boards. He is also a board member of the Canadian Association of Financial Institutions in Insurance.Mark is also very active in the community, currently serving on the Board of Directors and Chair of the HR Committee of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Toronto and as a Director of the Haliburton Club for Scouts Canada. 

LYTTON BARRETT 
 
Lytton is a resident of Markham, Unionville for over 35 years, where he started his business, Vanton Electric, in 1972. He has been founder/co-founder of Fairview Jamaica and TEKA Jamaica LTD, respectively.Additionally, he is the
President and CEO of Brant-Ville Construction Ltd and its subsidiaries, Brant-Ville Construction Management Inc. and BCMI Electric in Concord, Ontario. Lytton is known for his humanitarian contributions to his local and international communities. He is a strong supporter of charity events, especially those that serve marginalized communities.He has a big heart for education and ensuring that the marginalized is given a fair chance of education. Lytton has made significant contributions to many boards locally and internationally, and he is mentor and significant supporter of established leaders in the community. 
 
JULIAN FALCONER  
Julian Falconer  is a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada.A major component of Julian's practice has involved advocacy in human rights and public interest litigation.In addition to various corporate interests, Julian has acted as counsel for numerous community service organizations. Following the shooting death of Toronto high school student Jordan Manners at C.W. Jefferys School in May 2007, Julian was appointed to chair an independent inquiry into
the safety of students across the Toronto school system. The School Safety Panel's work resulted in a five volume report entitled "The Road to Health." Julian's public interest work has been recognized by many awards.  He has been named as one of Canada's Top 25 most influential lawyers.

White Man's Burden? The New Scramble For Africa By: Professor Hakim Adi.
 Hakim Adi is an internationally renowned scholar of Pan Africanism, African History and Politics, and the African Diaspora. The author of several important books on African Studies, he teaches at the University of Chichester in the UK. He has appeared in several television documentaries including BBC radio programs, and has written widely on the history of the African Diaspora and Africans in Britain, including three history books for children. Professor Adi starred in the multi-award winning documentary 500 Years Later (2005) alongside Maulana Karenga, Muhammed Shareef, Francis Cress Welsin, Kimani Nehusi, Paul Robeson Jr, and Nelson George. The film was written by M.K. Asante, Jr. and directed by Owen 'Alik Shahadah.

VP Records/17 North Parade celebrate 50 years of Jamaican Music with Clive Chin

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence, reggae music legend Clive Chin presents an exclusive DJ workshop on the history of Jamaican music. Chin is a Chinese-Jamaican record producer whose credits include recordings by Dennis Brown, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Augustus Pablo, Peter Tosh, Jackie Mittoo, The Wailers and Black Uhuru, among many others. Chin was a musical pioneer, producing the Java Java Dub album in 1973, arguably the first-ever dub album. Chin will be signing copies of the album following the event. Hosted by CBC personality Garvia Bailey.

 T&T 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebration with Pan Fantasy

Celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th Anniversary of Independence at this musical extravaganza produced by the award-winning Pan Fantasy Steelband. The celebration kicks off with a medley of classic calypso songs that spans generations, to contemporary numbers featuring a special homage to legendary calypsonian Mighty Sparrow.

Celebrating the Cinematography of Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago: 
Joebell and America, directed by Asha Lovelace (Jamaica)
Friday, Feb. 3, 6:30 p.m. (Studio Theatre) 

Based on the true story by Earl Lovelace, Joebell and America tells the story of Joebell, a gambler who concocts a risky plan to escape to the promise and fantasy of America. Prepared to leave everything behind, including his newly-found romance with the village beauty, Joebell sets out for his final destination. The film received the Best International Narrative Feature Award at the Women’s International Film Festival.

Alice, a bi-racial 11-year-old girl, has recently lost her mother in a car accident caused by her father’s drunk driving. As father and daughter begin a new life, Alice is haunted by nightmares and memories of her mother’s death
and the new woman in her father’s life. Winner of the Best Feature Award at the San Francisco Urban Kidz Film Festival, the Star! Audience Choice Award at the ReelWorld Film Festival and the 1st Annual Tony Stoltz Completion Fund

Celebrating the Cinematography of Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago:

A series of short films celebrating the richness of Jamaican and Trinidadian cinema.

Caribbean Skin, African Identity, directed by Mandisa Patin (Trinidad & Tobago)             
Caribbean  Skin is a documentary that examines the concept of African identity as it has evolved over generations in Trinidad & Tobago. In it, the director explores her own identity using the Emancipation Day parade and its
rituals as a starting point for her journey. Interviews with African-Caribbean scholars define and explain some of the complexities of race in this society.


Directions, directed by Renee Pollonais (Trinidad & Tobago)
No one gives directions like a Trinidadian. In this short dramatization of that endearing and frustrating phenomenon, a number of persons are asked to give directions to a well-known Port of Spain landmark, with hilarious results.
Directions received the People’s Choice Award at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival. 

Entry Denied, directed by Christopher Browne (Jamaica)
Entry Denied  follows the story of a young Jamaican footballer from the ghetto of Kingston who is refused a visa to take up a scholarship at a university in the US.  Dramatic events and coincidences conspire to take the story to an alternate
conclusion.

Now Jimmy!, directed by Mary Wells (Jamaica)
Now Jimmy! is a short documentary that explores land rights issues. The film follows a riveting and unusual story about the title character, a squatter who has built a out of salvaged materials on prime Jamaican real estate. The film received the Outstanding Documentary from the Caribbean Award by the Sheryl Lee Ralph Jamerican Film & Music Festival, iscreened at TIFF and chosen by UNESCO to be a part of an international selection of films from around the world for the new Radio-Television Afghanistan.

Lying Lips, directed by Oscar Micheaux in partnership with COMMFFEST 
Saturday, Feb. 4, 5 p.m. (Studio Theatre) 

Lying Lips is a 1939 drama starring Edna Mae Harris and Robert Earl Jones (the father of James Earl Jones) that follows a nightclub singer who refuses to "date" customers, so she's framed for the murder of her aunt, convicted of the
killing and sent to prison. However, her friend, who is a police detective, doesn't believe she did it and sets out to prove her innocence.

Finder of Lost Children, directed by Ricardo Scipio (Trinidad & Tobago)
Saturday, Feb. 4, 7:30 p.m. (Studio Theatre)

Finder of Lost Children is the story of two half-sisters that meet for the first time after the funeral of the father neither one of them knew. These reluctant siblings make a road trip to deal with their father’s meager possessions and discover the existence of several other lost brothers and sisters who are unaware of their father’s passing. The film was screened at the Hollywood Black Film Festival and at CaribbeanTales Film Festival.

13th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration  in Toronto

13, 2012 - TORONTO.  The Black  Business and Professional Association (BBPA), Education Foundation for  Children's Care Canada (EFCCC), and Metro Youth Federation will host its 13th  Annual Martin Luther King Celebration on January 14th at the McVety Conference  Centre, 50 Gervais Drive, Don Mills/Eglinton at 6:30 pm. 
In light of the recent  Washington D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr.
National Memorial that was dedicated on  October 16th, 2011 in the United
States, the BBPA would like to follow suit once  more with a special celebration in honour of this visionary leader. Like the  memorial, the theme for the event is "Beyond the Dream." The celebration is  co-hosted by Nneka Elliott, former CP24 TV personality and President of the  Media Huddle, and Mr. Donald McLeod, Attorney, with Keynote Speaker the renowned  Author, Educator, Youth Activist, dynamic and international Motivational Speaker  Professor Eric Thomas from Michigan, USA.  It is a joint community event that  will be televised on Rogers TV. There will also be representatives from the  media and the municipal government, along with community dignitaries.  

The event  will feature some of Toronto's top artists, musicians and lyricists
  including: Rexdale Outreach Choir, Toronto Children's Concert Choir, McMaster University Choir, Hands of Blessings, Robert Chambers, Rashaan Allwood Allstar Band, Rhonelle Patrick, Venessa Nyarkoh, Nadine Williams, Jasmyn Fyffe, Al St. Louis, Miranda Singh, and many more.

The World’s economy is changing, and people are losing their homes. What if it happened to you? Stori Ya tells the tale of an East African woman, Maria, facing the repossession of her home. Moments before her place is taken, Maria hosts a last dinner and invites guests from her past. Stori Ya is filled with characters and traditional African songs, as Maria tells fascinating tales about a journey from Tanzania to Canada, filling you with the bittersweet memories of her life.
Stori Ya was presented at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto (2005) and at the Playwrights Theatre Centre in Vancouver (2007), and has been workshopped by famed Canadian playwright Judith Thompson and Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal.

Film d’ouverture – CASE DÉPART (Back to Square One) Le jeudi 22 septembre 19 h au Cinéma Impérial, CASE DÉPART (Back to Square One) de Fabrice Éboué, Thomas Ngijol et Lionel Steketee ouvrira le Festival en grande première nord-américaine – version originale française, sous-titrée en anglais. Avec plus de 1 750 000 spectateurs en France, ce film acclamé par le public et la critique sera présenté par Global Montreal, en présence des deux humoristes, acteurs principaux et coréalisateurs Thomas Ngijol et Fabrice Éboué. Case départ, une comédie sur l'identité avec comme toile de fond l'esclavage au XVIIIe siècle, sera également en compétition officielle. Film de clôture – I AM SLAVE (Moi, esclave) Le dimanche 2 octobre 19 h au Cinéma Impérial, I AM SLAVE (Moi, esclave) de Gabriel Range clôturera les festivités en présence du réalisateur et sera présenté par Droits et Démocratie. Sélection officielle au Festival de Toronto 2010, I Am Slave est le plus récent film de Gabriel Range, réalisateur du film Death of a President, et est scénarisé par Jeremy Brock, qui a aussi écrit The Last King of Scotland, lequel a valu l'Oscar du meilleur acteur à Forest Whitaker. Grand prix hommage au légendaire Souleymane Cissé par Dany Laferrière Le mardi 27 septembre 18 h à l'Hôtel Gouverneur Place Dupuis, le réalisateur Souleymane Cissé recevra le Grand prix hommage du 7e Festival international du film black de Montréal. Ce prix lui sera remis par le célèbre écrivain Dany Laferrière, récipiendaire du prix Médicis 2009. Premier cinéaste africain à être primé au Festival de Cannes, légende du cinéma africain, Souleymane Cissé recevra ce prix pour l'ensemble de son œuvre, pour sa contribution exceptionnelle à l'industrie du cinéma en général et au milieu du cinéma indépendant et africain en particulier. Conférence-débat : FONDU AU NOIR / FADE TO BLACK Le samedi 24 septembre de 13 h à 16 h au Cinéma ONF, le FIFBM présentera la conférence-débat « Fondu au Noir / Fade to Black », cette fois sous le thème CINÉMA BLACK – définition, rôle, tabous, financement et place des Noirs au cinéma et à la télévision au Québec et au Canada aujourd'hui. Fondu au Noir est présenté par la Fondation Fabienne Colas eta pour intention de créer un espace de dialogue sur les réalités du cinéma indépendant black d’ici et d’ailleurs. Commémoration et hommage à la mémoire d'AZOR Le samedi 24 septembre 19 h au centre culturel La Perle Retrouvée se tiendra une grande soirée commémorative célébrant la mémoire du populaire chanteur, tambourineur et maestro du groupe Racine Mapou de Azor Lénord Fortuné, plus connu sous le nom d'Azor. Lénord Fortuné est décédé en juillet 2011, en Haïti. Au programme, le Film Haïti cœur battant de Carl Lafontant et un spectacle de musique haïtienne.
