Pius Adesanmi is the internationally-acclaimed winner of the inaugural Penguin Prize for African Writing. Born in Nigeria, he now lives in Ottawa, Canada, where he teaches Literature and African Studies at Carleton University. He is one of Nigeria's major public intellectuals and writes two weekly op-ed columns for the influential Sahara Reporters and NEXT newspaper. His first book, The Wayfarer and Other Poems, won the Association of Nigerian Authors' National Poetry Prize in 2001. The Africa Dialogue Series at Carleton University seeks to promote the better understanding and discussions of current policy issues facing the African continent. Through an informed presentation concerning one of the complex and substantive policy issues facing policy-makers and societies at large in the continent, the series aims to engage students and the wider public in Ottawa-Gatineau in a dialogue concerning the implications of global issues for Africa. The Carleton University Library Circle of Friends and the Institute of African Studies at Carleton University present: a panel discussion entitled “The early days of Tanzania’s Independence”, with Tom Torrance author of Dar es Salaam 1963. The period covered in Mr Torrance’s book is just after Tanganyika (now Tanzania) became independent from its British colonial masters in late 1961 and shortly thereafter, changed its constitution away from a British style responsible government with a Prime Minister into a Republic with a President. Julius Nyerere had been elected as the first President and his inauguration took place in December 1962, one month prior to Mr Torrance’s arrival as a Junior Economist on temporary terms with the Government of Tanganyika. The panel will focus on the first few years of Tanzania’s independence as well as giving some attention to wider issues such as development and international assistance right up to the present.
