Panelists: Paul Hitschfeld was ASG Chair from 2009 to 2012. He has worked in international development for over 40 years, with NGOs, CIDA and as a university lecturer. His main interest is in the post-independence experience of African countries. He will provide a short report on the recent Canadian Council on Africa Roundtable on Increasing Canadian Business Presence in Africa, with his conclusions that efforts to do so will need to be quite narrowly targeted. First masterclass in 'Exodus: Movement, Culture, People,' a collaborative project supported by Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa Local Immigration Partnership (OLIP), House of Paint Arts Festival and the Ottawa Native Friendship Centre. This project is designed to provide support for high school students in the National Capital Region to examine the connections between migration, diaspora and Canadian diversity.
The masterclass will take place at the Migration/Representation/Stereotypes conference. The facilitator of the masterclass will be Dr. Henry Daniel, Professor of Dance and Performance Studies in the School for the Contemporary Arts in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, Simon Fraser University. A choreographer, performer, and media artist, Dr. Daniel concentrates on issues of identity and diaspora, and investigates how contemporary bodies perform and transform our sense of place, space, culture and identity. He would like students in the workshop to wear comfortable clothes and sneakers/soft shoes, and may use a recording device to record the participants voices as an accompaniment for their improvised movements.
