FILM: Cinema Academica presents:The Agronomist. "The Agronomist" tells the story of Jean Dominique, a groundbreaking Haitian activist, journalist and freedom fighter who at one point lifted the hopes for liberation in Papa Doc Duvalier's Haiti to new heights. Trained as an agronomist but lacking land, Dominique turned to film and radio to give expression to his people's aspirations in the tradition of Paolo Freiere's Pedagogy of the Oppressed. As the operator of his nation's oldest and only non-governmental radio station, Dominique was frequently at odds with Haiti's repressive government and spent much of the 1980s and 90s in exile in New York, where filmmaker Jonathan Demme interviewed him several times over many years. Demme found inspiration in Dominique's tireless fight against injustice, oppression and poverty in Haiti but it was the activist's shocking and still-unsolved assassination in April of 2000 that gave Demme the impetus to assemble more than a decade's worth of material into a celebration of tis dynamic man and his legacy. English and French with subtitles. 91 min. Discussion after the film.
