Africa Dialogue Series talk: " The Africa Capacity Indicators Reports: The Promise and Challenges Ahead, feat. Dr. Moses Kiggundu. The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) was founded in 1992. It was conceived as an African institution designed to forge partnerships between African governments and the international donor community to help build critically needed development capacities in support of the reforms. It has evolved as the leading African institution in Africa in the areas of capacity and capacity development. This presentation will provide a brief background and introduction of ACBF’s Africa Capacity Indicators (ACI) and the Africa Capacity Indicators Reports (ACIR). It will summarize some of the key
findings, policy and research implications, and lessons so far learnt. Looking
ahead, the presentation will identify some of the challenges of producing
indicators in general, and ACI in particular. Moses Kiggundu is Professor of
Management and International Business at the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University. His research focuses on international development management, managing globalization and creating conditions for the development of a competitive, equitable and inclusive economy and society in developing countries and emerging economies. He is currently working on various aspects of African capacity building including China-Africa legal and judicial systems for mutual benefits. The Africa Dialogue Series at Carleton University seeks to promote the better understanding and discussions of current policy issues facing the African continent. Through an informed presentation concerning one of the complex and substantive policy issues facing policy-makers and societies at large in the continent, the series aims to engage students and the wider public in Ottawa-Gatineau in a dialogue concerning the implications of global issues forAfrica. The Africa Dialogue Series is jointly organized by the South African High Commission in Canada and Carleton University’s Institute of African Studies.
Refreshments will be served. More information: http://www2.carleton.ca/africanstudies/cu-events/the-africa-capacity-indicators-reports-the-promise-and-challenges-ahead

Persona Non Grata: Art by Lesotho's Orphans. Persona Non Grata is a charity art show held to benefit the orphans of Rachel’s Home, an orphanage and school in Maputsoe, Lesotho. This event will raise funds for post-secondary scholarships for the orphans, and educate about the ongoing AIDS epidemic in Lesotho. The show will feature thought-provoking photography and paintings by the orphans of Rachel’s Home. Attendees will experience art, African music, spoken word poetry and a Lesotho marketplace. Unfortunately, there is stigma and discrimination associated with those
affiliated with HIV/AIDS in Lesotho. We believe the only way to break the stigma is to provide the children with a post-secondary education in order for them to become functioning members of their community. Stephanie Vizi is the founder of Persona Non Grata. She is a fourth-year Carleton student. She has had the opportunity to travel to Lesotho twice to volunteer at Rachel's Home. She started Persona Non Grata because she feels privileged to
receive a post-secondary education and she believes her friends in Lesotho should be able to do the same.

Talk @ Carleton: A discussion on independent media in Mathare, East
Africa's second-largest slum. Independent media in the heart of East Africa's second-largest slum? Talk about an underreported story! Yet for the
approximately 300,000 residents of the Mathare estate in Nairobi Kenya, where most live on less than $1 a day, community-controlled media is a key platform for articulating social struggles and building collective solutions to pressing problems. Young people make up the energetic majority of the working-class Mathare neighbourhood. Always willing to take up new challenges, two organizations of young people have established Mathare-based independent media groups to share issues and generate conversations relevant to their own lives. Liberation Cooperative Organization (LCO) publishes a quarterly magazine, Liberation, and offers video and print media training workshops to expand knowledge of media production and advance equality and solidarity. Mathare Radio is an up-and-coming project dedicated to coperation and equity, aiming to start an online and physical radio station in the heart of Mathare. To this effect, Mathare Radio has produced two features including one for L'Association mondiale des radiodiffuseurs communautaires (AMARC) in Montreal. Workers from these allied organizations are pleased to welcome you to presentation and group
discussion on the role of independent media in our communities both in Nairobi and Ottawa. For more info, contact Wairimu Gitau at [email protected]
