BOOK LAUNCH: To Follow Right – a Journalist’s Journey, by Ewart Walters. Writing mostly news for over 50 years, Ewart Walters has finally turned to writing about himself. The first book of its kind by a Jamaican journalist turned diplomat and Canadian Federal public servant, it is a story of deep revelations about powerful interests, and well documented analysis. With tickling tales and moving moments, it is a captivating story of his remarkable journey from the rural innocence of the foothills of the Blue Mountains, through the plains of Kingston, Jamaica, and the snows of Ottawa, Canada, to the hurly-burly of shark-infested diplomatic waters of New York. It is a canvas of Jamaican life in the 1940s and 1950s with portraits of the transportation systems, surviving Hurricane Charlie, and life at a boy’s boarding school along with culture clashes in Ottawa and the creativity employed to overcome them. It paints the Middle Passage experience of his life which took place in the Seventies, a time in the life of Jamaica’s development that he dissected evenly between Jamaica and North America. It is a tale of journalistic development and political turmoil amidst a virtual civil war with gun crime, political murders and international intrigue, all seen and conveyed through the watchful eyes of the reporter. It is also the story of his interventions for his community through diplomacy, journalism and voluntary organisations, all sustained by his uncomplicated faith in God.

Urgent Appeal for Somalia Drought: Fundraising BBQ. All proceeds go towards HCI’s campaign to raise funds for drought victims. Millions of people face severe food shortages in Somalia. Due to years of consecutive drought, the weakest people are hardest hit. With no rain in sight, livestock continue to die, collapsing the economy and forcing a mass exodus of people to other areas. Somalia is a devastated land, a country that has unfortunately, been largely forgotten by the outside world despite its enormous need for immediate assistance. Countless lives have been saved through HCI's projects in the affected areas of Somalia. We must intervene now to avert a full-scale humanitarian disaster and save the lives of thousands of vulnerable victims. We urge you to generously support humanitarian aid in drought-stricken Somalia by donating online or in person at Human Concern International:

National Tour on LBGTQ Refugees Meeting. The North Star Triangle Project (NSTP) will conclude the final leg of its national tour in Newfoundland and Ontario from July 21 to 27. NSTP is a volunteer effort to educate and mobilize Canadian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities about LGBT/Queer refugees in the world. It is a cross-Canada tour to promote "Group of 5" sponsorships.
The Canadian government has expressed concern over the persecution of LGBT people in the world. Canadian GLBT persons have an opportunity to help gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people around the world through sponsorships and a federal government sponsored pilot project. Everyone is invited to attend to meet David Pepper. David is a long-time gay activist from Ottawa who is travelling across Canada to raise awareness about LGBTQ refugees and promote the idea of private sponsorships. The North Star Triangle Project is linking up individuals and communities from across Canada to mobilize around the humanitarian disaster of refugees. In particular, LGBTQ refugees from Uganda to Iran to Colombia face real and present danger. The North Star Triangle Project will allow people to find out more about what is happening in Canada and how to help around the world. Ottawa will be the 21st and final city in the tour across Canada that was launched in Winnipeg on April13, 2011.

UNA-Canada’s Multimedia & Multiculturalism (M&M) initiative reflects a commitment to social cohesion in Canada by examining and enhancing the role media plays in contributing to the inclusive representation of all Canadians and implementing innovative employment enhancement. M&M works directly with media agencies, post-secondary institutions and ethno-cultural communities to work towards strategic goals, open up dialogue and work towards creating media that is free from stereotypes, racism and other forms of discrimination. By representing the broadest possible spectrum of voices, opinions, and realities, and by being accessible to all Canadians, inclusive media provides an authentic account of the world around us and works to bring under-represented populations into the mainstream and showcase the ‘new mainstream’. To learn more about the M&M Project please visit our website: http://mmunac.org/ and Youtube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/MMUNAC
